The Zoroastrian Fire Temple
The Zoroastrian Fire Temple in Yazd is highlighted by the preservation of the Atash Varahram (also known as Atash Behram), where the sacred fire burns. This fire, which has been lit since 1520, holds special significance in the Iranian Zoroastrian community. Initially, the Atash Varahram was housed in the Nahid-e Pars Fire Temple, but after the Arab invasion, it was transferred to the village of Haftad near Aqda. It was then moved to Tarkabad in Ardakan, where it was protected for years in the Shokufteh Cave of Yazdan. In 1946 (1325 SH), the fire was brought to Yazd and kept in the Mobedan neighborhood, and eventually transferred to the Varahram Fire Temple. The Atash Varahram is located in the center of the fire temple building, at a higher level than the ground, and this part of the structure is protected from sunlight, wind, and rain. This fire burns within a bronze fireplace. Surrounding the room containing the sacred fire are other chambers designated for worship and prayer. Hirbad is responsible for the maintenance and keeping the Atash Varahram lit.
