The Bam Citadel

The Bam Citadel, one of the famous attractions of Kerman province, is over 2,500 years old and dates back to the Parthian or Achaemenid period. This structure is located on the southeastern edge of the Lut Desert, near the city of Bam. The Bam Citadel is a unique mudbrick structure that is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a national monument of Iran, featuring fascinating architecture.

This structure is a remarkable example of defensive architecture in Iran and has historically protected the eastern regions of Iran as a strong fortress. Before the 2003 Bam earthquake, it was the largest mudbrick structure in the world. Until a century ago, this building was still inhabited and consisted of two sections: a residential area for commoners and a governmental area. The upper part of the citadel served as the political and military command center and the residence of the ruling class.

Despite the devastation caused by the massive earthquake, the Bam Citadel was not removed from the UNESCO list, and continuous efforts by officials have led to the preservation and restoration of some parts of the structure. This largest mudbrick building in the world managed to survive the earthquake’s destruction and has once again become one of Bam’s most visited tourist attractions. Today, the Bam Citadel stands as a shining jewel in the history of Kerman province and is considered one of the notable and frequently visited attractions in the region.
