Sheikh Safi al-Din Shrine

The Khanqah and Shrine of Sheikh Safi al-Din is one of the exceptional examples of Islamic architecture from the medieval period, recognized as the only site from Ardabil listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Initially, this structure served as a place for worship and religious service, later becoming a mausoleum for the founder of the complex and several notable figures of the Safavid era. Besides Sheikh Safi al-Din Ardabili, the ancestor of the Safavid dynasty and founder of this khanqah, several other prominent individuals, sheikhs, and even Safavid rulers, including Shah Ismail I, his wife (the mother of Shah Tahmasp), and those who perished in the battles of Shirvan and Chaldiran, are buried in this complex.
